Emilia (Kamas) Stefanik and Stefan Stefanik (seated). Standing is Stefan’s younger brother Paul Stefanik. Baby Stephen was actually Emilia’s son from a previous unhappy, arranged (?) marriage, which ended in divorce. The baby was born January 1, 1908 after her second (long and happy) marriage to Stefan Sr. In this photo Emilia was 18 years old and Stefan Sr. was 22.

Emilia and Stefan were both born in Czechoslovakia. The Kamas family had moved to Cleveland, Ohio (?) when Emilia was around 14(?) years old. When young Stefan was born Emilia and Stefan Stefanik lived in Pennsylvania, where Stefan worked in the coal mines . Emilia worked as a seamstress. I vaguely remember that she also served meals to men who boarded with them. They loved her cooking and said that she could make a delicious meal out of anything, even an old shoe. Their other five children were born in Ohio.

NOTE: This photo is a mirror image of the original. In the old photo albums the formal family pictures usually had the father seated at the left-hand side of the picture and the mother at the far right-hand side..
